Hiring Process
Ultimately, the responsibility to clean up the Gulf Coast fell on BP. They hired Miller Environmental Group to help with the efforts, and that company sub-contracted Aerotek. Rundy Charles Robertson was hired by Aerotek. He had to pass a drug screen and physical to get the job, but he did not have to submit to a background check.

According to an Aerotek representative, they did not require background checks because Miller Environmental Group did not request them. He suggests that Aerotek is not liable for anything that happened among their employees. How this will affect BP remains to be seen, but spokesperson Robert Wine asserts the company is not responsible. He stated that BP has no authority over the hiring process of sub-contractors.

Shocking Results
Thousands of people were hired to help with the cleanup efforts. None of them were asked to submit to background checks during the hiring process, but many have since been investigated. The results are disturbing.

In LaFourche Parish, Louisiana 20 registered sex offenders were placed on the job along with several people who had active warrants against them. Nearly 25% of workers in Grand Isle, Louisiana were found to have misdemeanors or felonies on record. It seems that many of the people who were hired in the Gulf had criminal records that were not discovered until after they were brought on board.

What’s Next?
Currently, Robertson is being held in Jackson County Prison. His bail is set at $505,000 as he awaits his trial. Whether or not BP will be held accountable for this crime, or any others committed by cleanup workers, remains to be seen.

People are outraged by this situation. It seems hard to believe that a registered sex offender could be put in charge of supervising a group of workers. To make matters worse, it seems this incident could have easily been avoided. Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd told reporters that his department would have provided background checks at no charge, if they had been aware of the situation. Had that happened, they would have immediately flagged and arrested Rundy Charles Robertson.
