The college experience is, in many cases, the most important four years in our children’s lives, as it will shape their future personal and professional direction. That being said, securing admission to a college or university that best match students’ desires, strengths, and aspirations is essential.

Whether it happens to be that long awaited home improvement project, saving for a summer vacation or preparing for retirement, I think we can agree that any worthy project will go through a “launch phase.” This phase consists of a time of dreaming, planning and targeting specific time-lines to hit as you begin to “execute” your plan. The same holds true in the college search for athletes and below are snapshots of general suggestions that might just help you along the way.

Gather Information

Gathering information is critical to the successful organization of any worthy project. Building a college recruiting information base can begin as early as the ninth grade as a family hobby and increasingly grow into a highly organized, disciplined project by the end of the junior year.

Begin by gathering information on the student-athletes colleges of choice including team and coach profiles, statistics, ranking, and academic offerings. Continue to update and maintain individual e-files on these favorite college programs.

Develop your initial college list

This is where the fun begins! You have built an initial knowledge foundation about the college search and you have a pretty good idea of what you are looking for in a college experience. Now it’s time to develop a grouping of institutions that potentially meet that end.

Peterson’s College Search (www.petersons.com/collegesearch) is a great resource where you can input specific information about what you are looking for in a 4 year college experience and up comes a listing of colleges and universities that initially “match.” Investigate both the general and athletic college websites. From there you can begin to put together a more detailed list of coaches and their contact information.

Build your Team

Parents, prospect, high school/club coach, college advisor, guidance counselor and a personal mentor could all be part of your team in the college recruiting process. Each team player will have a specific role to play in order to ensure the prospect’s best chances in navigating the college search with confidence. Advance goals should be set with clarity and purpose that compliment the organizational structure of the recruiting process.

By selecting the team approach, the responsibilities are equally distributed to the area experts. All assignments should be clearly spelled out and communication between the team members should be frequent and consistent. This will help streamline the college quest and assist in avoiding any confusion that could contribute to unclear thinking, misdirection and potentially poor choices.

Define Yourself: The Profile

It is important to streamline your portfolio into a comprehensive and efficient format that stands above the rest. Keep your profile simple, neat and professionally formatted. Make the job of initial evaluation easy for the college coach by highlighting pertinent information including:

•	Personal and school contact information
•	Academic standing, awards, and test results
•	Physical characteristics
•	Athletic clubs and level, showcase tournaments, and elite camps
•	Athletic Statistics, Records, and Awards
•	Mission Statement
•	Coach’s Comments

Show your Stuff: The Video

A videotape, DVD or web stream are means of developing a first impression and trust me when I say that first impressions are remembered. Typically, a coach will roughly evaluate a recruit within the first 2 minutes of a video. They need to! Along with the hundreds of profiles, they are also being bombarded with hundreds of videos!

Make your video succinct, professional, and yet attention grabbing. Keep in mind that as individual collegiate sports differ, it is important to communicate with the individual college coaches about their requirements for DVD footage.

Develop your Plan

A knowledgeable consumer will have a clear edge in the pursuit of the attainment of any worthy product. I believe that the same holds true in the college search and I encourage families to make every effort and commitment to organize pertinent information regarding this process and to execute well-designed plans.

Develop timelines that will target general events in the beginning of the college search (making unofficial visits, maintaining your data base, and attending competitions) and continue with more specific events (compiling a video and player profile, communicating with coaches, and making official visits, etc.) as time progresses. This will increase the chances of “hitting targets” throughout the recruiting process.

Similar to a NASA Space Shuttle launch, the beginning phase of any college recruiting plan will be time consuming, demanding and require the greatest effort. That said, once you break free of that “gravity” and you remain persistent with your plan, you will give yourself the best chance in building and maintaining momentum toward your ultimate goal.

Learning to use computers and knowing the basics is always useful. Knowing these skills are important these days as almost every other activity requires you to use a computer. Here is some Know how.

When a person first sits down with a computer and wants to type something he or she is probably thinking “Do I really need to learn Microsoft Word?” After all, most computers come with a built in “notepad” or place where one can type a document. Why is learning Microsoft Word so important? The biggest reason one should learn Word is that knowing how to use this particular word processor is a valuable skill for just about any employment opportunity. If learning the program seems daunting, there are plenty of learning centers that are just waiting to teach “newbies” how to make the most out of the program.

Learning new skills, whether those skills revolve around a particular computer program or office strategy is important. In today’s economic climate one should not let a fear of technology keep them from moving up in their chosen profession. Most office professionals use word processing programs on a daily basis. In addition to typing a simple document, these programs can help a person with desktop publishing tasks, graphic art and several other skill sets that will help make one more valuable to his or her company.

Obviously learning any new technology can be scary. This is why it is a good idea to make a trip to the local learning center. The local educational center will have trained teachers on hand who can help new users navigate their way through MS Word. These teachers know how to use all of the different facets of the program from typing up a simple page of text to using the program to create a complicated flier or business document. The teacher can show new users how to track changes, which is easier than simply pressing “undo” over and over again and can help new users feel relaxed in the face of complicated new technology.

Having a teacher’s help is often far more beneficial than simply trying to learn a new skill or program on one’s own. The teacher can help the student identify where he might be going wrong during a particular task and can evaluate a student’s progress before moving that student on to a new skill—which will keep the student from trying to do too much too quickly and becoming overwhelmed.

The learning center is a great place to learn more about new technology—especially for people who want to keep up with the current needs of employers. In today’s economy there is no such thing as having too many skills!

If you are planning to learn the basics of computers, learning center with excellent credentials is available to guide you through the process. Learn and have fun. To know more, visit http://local.yodle.com

Our long awaited English Advanced courses are ready to be offered to the public. We are proud to announce that, starting from term 4 2010, Dux College will begin to offer tutoring courses for:

1. Preliminary English Advanced (year 11) :

2. HSC English Advanced ( year 12) :

Our English Advanced courses are developed by senior HSC markers. Unlike other tutoring centres, our English Advanced course is text specific – that means you learn only what’s directly relevant to your prescribed text. We do not waste time with half-relevant generalised content. Each weekly class will be 2 hours long, and continue throughout the year.

Preliminary English Advanced

The preliminary course will be a ‘dry run’ practice for the HSC, starting in Term 1 of year 11, and ending in term 3. In year 11, students will gain a wide exposure to different HSC-relevant texts. Students will gain early exposure to the requirements of the modules A, B and C, and will be shown how to analyse these texts for relevant issues to each module.

Exam-style homework will be marked according to HSC marking criteria and give students an early insight into how a response can be broken down as per the marking criteria. Students gain a systematic perspective as we demystify the factors of success by showing students countless examples of model answers, and giving them the opportunity to develop their own.

In the second half of term 3, students will get an early start into Area of Study: Belonging, giving them a solid foundation and introduction into the year 12 content, which becomes assessable for the HSC.

HSC English Advanced

The HSC course will start in the following term 4, and end in term 3 of year 12 (4 terms long in total). In addition to this, there will be holiday courses where students get a chance to revise, consolidate knowledge and further develop essential skills, such as essay writing and textual analysis.

The course starts with AOS for 12 weeks (continuing from the Preliminary English Advanced introduction to AOS), then coverage of the modules. Our classes and materials are specific to each student’s prescribed text at school (we don’t mix students doing different texts into the same class). Classes are interactive, fun and personalised – the class teacher will remain closely updated to each of his or her student’s progress, and all homework is marked by the class teacher, not someone else.

Students learn by analysing model answers with a breakdown of where marks are awarded for each type of question. Throughout the year, continue to build on their experience through doing exam-style homework which reflects all possible variations of HSC exam questions.

Now taking enrolments

We are now accepting enrolments for year 11s entering year 12 in Term 4 2010. The first classes will be in early October. To enquire or give an expression of interest, give us a call on (02) 8007 6824. To enrol, we will need to know what prescribed texts you are doing at school for HSC 2011.

About Dux College:

Dux College is a Sydney-based HSC coaching center specializing in HSC subjects & and also in HSC Physics, Chemistry Tutoring, maths tutoring, HSC English Tutoring.

There is no denying that nurses have made a huge impact on our society and on so many of our lives, whether they were famous or not. Although every nurse is sure to make an impact on many people during his or her lifetime, the following women are considered the 5 most influential nurses in history.

Florence Nightingale: The most famous figure from nursing history is definitely Florence Nightingale who cared for the weakest members of the population and fought to improve medical conditions while mentoring others to do similar work. She served in the Crimean War and helped make the conditions more sanitary and later worked with Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell to open the Women’s Medical College.

Margaret Sanger: The legalization of birth control can largely be attributed to Margaret Sanger who fought to spread the word about women’s health topics ranging from birth control to menstruation to sexuality. She got in trouble with the law in the U.S. and had to flee to Europe for a time as a result. She founded the organization that eventually became Planned Parenthood and opened the first legal clinic in the United States where women could get birth control.

Clara Barton: Soldiers in the Civil War would not have had the medical care they did if it weren’t for Clara Barton who started out organizing medical supplies and eventually braved the battlefields to provide care for soldiers as the Lady in Charge of Union hospitals appointed by Lincoln himself. She went on to begin the American Red Cross.

Mary Eliza Mahoney: As the United States’ first African American nurse, Mary Eliza Mahoney is an important part of history for many reasons. In addition to her many years of nursing and work to form new hospitals and African American orphanages, she also co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses.

Anna Caroline Maxwell: She was to the U.S. what Florence Nightingale was to Europe. Anna Caroline Maxwell was in charge of Army nurses in the Spanish-American War, founder of the Army Nurse Corps, recipient of the Medal of Honor for Public Health in WWII and first director of what is now the Columbia School of Nursing.

If you’re interested in learning how to become a surgical technician, you may want to visit a local school to see what the educational path is for this career, but before you take that step it’s a good idea to figure out whether this career is right for you. A surgical technician is an assistant to the doctors and nurses who perform operations in hospitals, clinics and doctor’s offices. As is true of most healthcare professionals, the demand for qualified surgical technicians is on the rise because of the burgeoning elderly population. If you have the determination to finish years of studying and the disposition to work in a stressful environment and witness surgeries, this might be the job for you.

If you have graduated high school, the first step to becoming a surgical technician is to find a vocational school or community college offering a two-year certification program to prepare you for this career. The courses will teach you about surgical operations and the role of doctors, nurses and technicians in the operating room. If you get the grades to graduate, you’ll just need to pass the exams for certification. You may choose to go into a specific specialty after you’ve completed your program, such as setting up the operating room or working as a scrub assistant. You’ll also probably need to choose a specific branch of medicine to go into such as orthopedic medicine or neurology, but you may want to wait until you’ve had some experience on the job before deciding which surgical specialization is right for you.

There are jobs for surgical technicians in hospitals, clinics and private doctor’s offices. One of the most important aspects of the job is being able to study and understand the surgeons you’re working for, so you can anticipate what they will need during surgeries. Your job is to make the whole process as smooth and successful as possible for everyone involved. The median expected salary for surgical technicians in the U.S. is $40,064, and with experience you can earn more. So does this job sound right for you?

Find detailed information about top health science schools which offer surgical technician and technology degree courses at HealthDegreesU.com.

After you learn how to become an enterprise architect and find out how excellent the pay and job outlook are, you may be motivated to begin your training for this rewarding career right away. But first you must learn what the job entails and whether you are a good fit for this kind of work.

As an enterprise architect you will be responsible for designing, developing and maintaining computer applications software or specialized utility programs for companies of all sizes, nonprofit organizations, government offices and other entities. You will be in charge of any changes, revisions and updates made during the course of enhancements and improvements to computer network systems. You will develop new application packages, computer languages and operating systems. Some enterprise architects also develop customized applications, packaged systems and systems software. Skills in computer science and mathematical analyses are a must, but you should also have communication and interpersonal skills to work as a member of a team.

The educational requirements may vary by employer, but you will probably be better off if you get a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics or software engineering, although some employers will be satisfied with an associate’s degree. Some advanced enterprise architect jobs may also require master’s degrees, but you’ll probably want to get the bachelor’s and work in the field for a few years before you get this additional training. The more experience you can get the better – if you have a great deal of knowledge in computer systems and the related technologies through internships and part time jobs during school you will be much better off than less experienced applicants. You will also want to work towards classification as a Certified Software Development Professional, which requires a bachelor’s degree, experience and passage of an exam.

The job outlook for enterprise architects is excellent. The number of jobs for enterprise architects is expected to increase by approximately 47 percent by 2016 in California, for example, and there are similar expectations around the nation. The average salary for enterprise architects with education and experience is $107,000. It’ an excellent job in a burgeoning field.

The differences between an interior decorator and an interior designer may seem inconsequential, but there are actually many things that set these two careers apart. People who work as professional interior designers typically have more education, typically in the form of a bachelor’s degree from a four-year university. Some designers also extend their education and complete a graduate degree in a design specialization, which makes them more desirable to future employers and clients. Interior decorators may also receive training and education in their chosen field, but usually it is either from a community college or online distance learning institution. This difference is just the beginning, though.

The essence of an interior design career is more than just creating the outward appearance of a room, building or space. Interior designers often have experience with architecture and understand how to pull elements from the building itself into the room and implement the other items that are arranged throughout the design space. They can handle everything from choosing and arranging the furniture to configuring the lighting to dressing the windows and doors, or even choosing where the windows and doors will go in the case of new construction. Interior designers may also change the current structure of the architecture if it fits with their design plans.

Interior decorators are more concerned with the outward, aesthetic appearance of a room, building or space. They may choose the furniture, paint colors, wallpaper, flooring, cabinetry, tiles, linens, window treatments, artwork and accessories that are placed in a room. They are experts at picking out and arranging things to achieve a desired look. Interior decorators may be hired by individuals to decorate a room or an entire home, or they may work for corporations, small businesses and/or nonprofit organizations that need help decorating their offices or retail space.

While interior decorators usually work with all types of homes and businesses doing all sorts of decorating, interior designers typically have a specialty such as commercial spaces, offices, art galleries, private homes or building exteriors. These two professions also have a lot in common, though, and it’s not uncommon to find designers and decorators working hand in hand.
