If you have injured something in your musculoskeletal system, such as breaking a limb or spraining a muscle, you may need the help of an orthopedic surgeon. Choosing the right one is essential, because the injuries these doctors work with have a lasting impact on your future health and mobility. As you are choosing one of these doctors, keep these things in mind.

Experience

When you need an orthopedic surgeon, you want to find a doctor with a lot of experience, not just in the medical field, but in the area you are seeking help. For instance, if you need help with your knees, choose a doctor with a lot of experience treating knees. When you meet with a doctor, ask specifically about his or her experience.

Education

Find out where the doctor was educated and where the residency occurred. These tidbits of information will help you choose a doctor. You want one that has at least a four year undergraduate degree on top of his or her medical degree, followed by several years of internship and residency.

Talk to Doctors

If you have a family doctor, ask for a referral for an orthopedic surgeon. If you do not currently have a family doctor or want additional advice, ask any friends you have who are in the medical field. The more referrals you get, the better your chances of finding a quality, qualified doctor.

Use the Internet

The Internet can help you find a doctor. Find websites that offer patients the opportunity to review doctors. This can give you valuable insight into the “bedside manner” of a particular doctor. You can also use the Internet to check whether or not the doctor is listed with the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Medical Association, two professional organizations that oversee doctors in this field.

Ask Friends

You likely know someone who has used the services of an orthopedic surgeon. If not, some of your friends or family likely have relatives who have. Talk to these individuals to find out what they liked and did not like about a particular doctor. If possible, talk to people who had conditions similar to yours. This will ensure that you get the best possible advice about a particular doctor.

Get a Second Opinion

Once you find a doctor, schedule a consultation. After you receive his or her recommendation, schedule another consultation with a doctor who also received good reviews. Compare the results of these consultations, and choose the doctor with the best plan to approach your condition. Remember, your health is at stake, so do not jump into a treatment plan, particularly if it is very invasive or requires surgery, without getting a second, or even a third, opinion.

Need help locating an orthopedic surgeon Chicago has many professional in your area. To find a doctor near you visit

If you have a medical condition that has not been fixed by any of the typical methods, you should consider acupuncture. Before you try this option, make sure that you know the risks, how it works, and who should not get this treatment.

If you have heard about the healing properties of acupuncture, you are probably curious how this practice can help you. Before you consider using this treatment, you should find out the basic facts about it. Additionally, you need to know who should avoid getting this kind of service since some people are not good candidates for it.

This practice involves inserting small needles into your skin on certain areas of your body. The idea behind it is that doing so can stimulate certain muscles and nerves, and get the blood flowing properly. It may even increase the chances of your body releasing a natural painkiller, so some people opt for acupuncture to get rid of chronic pain. Some of the main types of issues that it is good for helping include back pain, headaches, nausea, cramps, tooth pain, and sports injuries.

Though this practice can certainly help many people, there are a few risks involved, as well. You may experience some bleeding after the needle is introduced to the skin. If it does not bleed, you might still notice some soreness and even bruising. It is important that you choose an acupuncturist that is experienced and responsible since there is a possibility that used needles could introduce diseases like hepatitis to your body.

Some people will not only not benefit from acupuncture, but also could be putting themselves at risk when they get this kind of treatment. For example, if you are pregnant, you should know that needles could induce labor at any time, so you should avoid this procedure at this time. If you have a bleeding disorder or are on blood thinners, you have a particularly high chance of bleeding due to the needles, or ending up with bruises. Therefore, you should talk to your doctor before you consider acupuncture as a way to treat other medical conditions.

This kind of treatment can be a great idea for otherwise healthy people who have a medical issue that has not been solved through other means. As long as your doctor says it is okay, you can at least try this kind of therapy out since it works well for some people. However, you should be aware that it is not guaranteed to solve your problem, and may even be considered dangerous depending on any health issues you have. If you are generally healthy and have found a good acupuncturist, feel free to give acupuncture a chance to heal your medical condition.

Medical physicians trained in diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system are orthopedic surgeons. Even though they are classically trained in surgical procedures, many non-surgical treatment modalities are used to improve function after trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infection, tumor, and a variety of congenital disorders.

An orthopedic surgeon training schedule is rigorous and extensive. In addition to the usual four years of medical school, physicians must complete a five-year residency program which typically includes one year of general surgery or internal medicine training and four years of specific musculoskeletal training. Board certification is governed by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Separate standardized examinations can be completed to achieve an advanced Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ). Subspecialties that an orthopedic surgeon may elect to undertake include hands, shoulders, elbows, knees, feet and ankles, musculoskeletal oncology, sports medicine and trauma.

The most common procedures performed by this type of physician are knee arthroscopy and meniscectomy, followed by shoulder arthroscopy and decompression. Other common procedures include carpal tunnel release, support implant removal, anterior cruciate ligament repair, clavicle excision, laminectomy, finger tendon sheath incision, ankle fracture repair, total knee replacement, hip replacement, repair of femoral neck or trochanteric fracture, lumbar spinal fusion, as well as debridement of skin or muscle.

Arthroscopic techniques were first developed in the 1950s and are minimally invasive ways to repair cartilage and ligaments, reducing adverse risks and shortening post-operative recovery time. Most musculoskeletal surgeries are currently performed via arthroscope, which uses a small camera to evaluate or treat a variety of cartilage and ligament dysfunctions. Joint replacements are another common procedure used to repair fractures due to trauma or delay the requirement for more invasive replacements later in life. The biggest drawback to joint replacement therapy is the wear of component surfaces that bear weight. While this may not be a significant factor to consider in elderly patients only expected to live another five or ten years, younger patients should be warned of the eventual failure of the implant. Development of ceramic and all-metal implants may improve longevity of the implant.

The main goal of an orthopedic surgeon is to restore function after trauma, disease or injury. Patients are usually referred via their primary care physician or after a visit to an emergency room. Young patients are often seen after motor vehicle accidents or sports injuries. Elderly patients are commonly treated after falls. Recommendations for treatment vary widely depending on the current health of the patient, desired goals, and level of function lost.

Examinations and tests that an orthopedic surgeon may order include x-rays, MRIs, CT scans and/or laboratory analysis of blood. This type of physician is responsible for meeting with the patient before and after surgery in order to address questions and outline expectations for recovery. Follow-up medical support is often coordinated by the doctor in order to monitor progress and assess any need for further treatment.

Talk to your primary care physician or an orthopedic surgeon in your area today to discuss your musculoskeletal disorders and healthcare needs.

Rather than focusing on medical ratings and comments made by disgruntled clients who may be ranting about something as minimal as wait time, focus on actual credentials. First look for the medical school from which the doctor graduated; you can further your knowledge by checking into the credentials of that school. You may feel more comfortable being familiar with the school; you may feel uncomfortable if you cannot find any information on the school or if information is minimal. An unknown or poorly rated school does not mean that you are dealing with an under qualified physician—what you do with the rating you find is your personal choice.

Certainly you will want to verify licensure and review the professional’s board certification. A lapse in either of the categories is cause for further investigation. Become familiar with what it means to be board certified and determine if this is important to you in making your decision.

If your search is successful thus far, look into any legal actions that have been taken against the doctor in question. For the purpose of medical ratings only medical related cases will be shown, and legal actions can pertain to a realm of possibilities including insurance fraud, malpractice judgments, disciplinary actions, and suspensions. It is important to note that a malpractice case is not the same as a judgment. Innocent until proven guilty is also the law in medicine, and while several accusations should not be dismissed a sporadic legal case or two is normal for those in the profession.

Lastly, personal ratings can be found on most any doctor. Categories may include staff and hospital critiques, facility reviews, appointment availability, professionalism, and over all experience. Every situation is relative, but there is merit in the revelation that an alarming number of clients have similar issues.

While the only real way to tell if a doctor is right for you is to have a pre-consultation and perhaps a few appointments and it is always permissible to ask for a second opinion or even for a new provider all together, medical ratings can be a good tool in helping you choose a medical professional

Hand injuries can be devastating and crippling, given the extent that each of us relies on them to perform the most basic of tasks. While they can be treated in a variety of ways including physical therapy, a patient must be prepared for they fact that they may require surgery to correct the problem.

While surgery is generally performed as an out-patient procedure, it is a complicated procedure requiring training and experience. A surgeon must be able to skillfully and adequately reconstruct the skin, bone, nerves, tendons, and joints. Because this may require several operations to complete, patients must be committed to their recovery and aftercare.

Because the hand is such a delicate area, recovery from hand surgery may be more extensive than that for other cosmetic procedures. A patient may experience some nausea from the medication and be in pain for several days following the procedure. A doctor may prescribe injections rather than oral painkilling medications. Additionally, a doctor may utilize antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications. Special dressings and splinting may be used to manage swelling.

A patient may need to keep their hand elevated for several days and may have restrictions placed on certain activities or work following surgery, depending on their individual experience. After some surgeries a patient may need to keep the hand immobilized at night for several months in order to improve recovery. Your doctor will work closely with you on developing an individual plan based on a variety of factors including not only your injury and procedure but your age and medical history.

Many surgery patients will also require some type of therapy. Heat or massage therapy may be prescribed in addition to exercise, physical or occupational therapy which is important for regaining one’s full range of motion and optimal functionality.

The recovery process can be grueling, but is vital to follow the plan carefully. This is the only way to ensure that a patient experiences the best results and has the best chance of returning to being able to perform important personal and occupational tasks. A patient must maintain an optimistic attitude by focusing on the results and positive outcome of the process.

Because of the potentially complex procedure and extensive recovery required with surgery, when one has the option, they would be wise to spend some time researching several hand doctors. It is important to work with a doctor who you are comfortable with and trust to have your best interests in mind so that you are confident when following his or her recommended treatment and therapy.

A personal electronic health record refers to electronic applications that allow a patient to manage and access information pertaining to their health in an environment that is confidential, private and secure. Know the benefits of such a system.

A personal electronic health record refers to electronic applications that allow a patient to manage and access information pertaining to their health in an environment that is confidential, private and secure. This technology empowers patients as information is well organized and they are able to take part in the decision making process. There a number of systems available that offer features such as allowing patients to book appointments, providing them reminders about their appointment, summaries of consultation and doctor-patient messaging facilities. The need for unnecessary consultations is also reduced and the geographical boundaries to patient care can also be overcome.

Advantages of a personal electronic health record:
One main advantage of such records is that they are under the control of the individual and can be shared with other people such as family members, providers, and caregivers. A provider’s electronic health record on the other hand is under the control of the health care provider. The information that is available in a personal electronic health record is quite comprehensive and has a patient’s summary based on data that is taken from many different sources. It also has information such as the patient’s family history, allergies and over- the- counter medications.

In addition to keeping a track of your health history, such records can offer you a number of other benefits. It is not just your consultations and visits to you doctor that are recorded, but it also provide you with the right medical information when the situation demands. One good instance when these records can be beneficial is if you need to claim for compensation, or if your need a reimbursement from your insurance company.

Scanning health-related documents can prove beneficial for the future as well. By maintaining these records you can explain any health issues you have to your health-care provider with great ease. If you need to explain certain medical conditions, you may have had to your doctor, all you need is to take a print out of the relevant documents. This will save your physician time, as you may not have to repeat some of the tests you have already done.

Having access to an array of health information that is credible gives patients a greater leverage to manage their disease and improve their health. Disease tracking on a collaborative basis can also help lower any communication barriers that might be there between caregivers and patients. Improved communication will make it more comfortable for a patient to ask questions, set up appointments, report problems and request refills.

A <a href=”http://www.h2analytics.com/index.html”>Personal Electronic Health Record</a> authorizes patients to take charge of their own health record and evaluate their health, real-time. To know more, visit <a href=”http://www.h2analytics.com”>http://www.h2analytics.com</a>

Need to visit a hand surgeon? Any kind of surgery can be scary and finding a doctor you can trust is a daunting task when under pressure and stress; especially if something as important and valuable as your hands is involved. So how should you go about choosing the right expert? Here are some basic rules to follow that will help you find a suitable one quickly.

Qualifications
The first thing you should do when choosing a potential doctor is some background research to ensure they have all the proper qualifications and credentials. Requirements vary by state and region, so it is important to check local laws beforehand. Although not a determiner of skill, you may also wish to see where they studied medicine. More prestigious schools do tend to attract more skilled doctor, but just because a hand surgeon isn’t Ivy League doesn’t mean he isn’t highly qualified.

Experience
Even surgeons who have the best education possible and are highly recommended are not always the most experienced. Experience comes from working for many years in the field and treating a variety of cases. Some surgeons become specialists because have so much experience with a specific problem that they become experts on the subject.

Location
Depending on where you live, you may have many options or very few. You definitely want to choose a skilled, experienced, and qualified one, but if you can’t afford to make the trip out to see them, it isn’t going to be much of a help. If you leave in a very remote area, you may be able to find some surgeons that live near a friend or relative that will allow you to stay with them during part of your recovery period until you are able to comfortably travel home.

If you do choose a distant hand surgeon, be prepared to have to pay the travel costs, as well as potential hotel or private nurse care fees if you must spend a few nights in the area for a follow up appointment.

Referrals
Probably the most common and effective method of choosing a hand surgeon is by asking your general care doctor, friends, and family members. You doctor should be able to make you a few recommendations based on his professional experience.

If you want even more options, start spreading the word that you are looking for a hand surgeon or specialist. You’d be surprised how quickly word of mouth can spread and your best friend’s coworker’s cousin just might have a fantastic recommendation for you.

The great thing about using referrals, both from a doctor and an acquaintance, is that you can get a firsthand account of the procedure and the overall skills and beside manners.

However you end up choosing your hand surgeon, be sure that you feel comfortable and confident in his care. It’s also important to understand that even the greatest doctors make mistakes or have patients that suffer from complications.

Considering how often most people use their hands, it is not surprising that hand surgery is frequently needed to repair injuries. Getting an idea of what the main types of hand surgery are can help you act fast if you are ever injured in that area.

You likely use your hands everyday, whether to work, eat, feed pets, and surf the Internet, to name a few common habits. Thus, any type of trauma that occurs to one or both hands is cause for concern. If you have any issues with this area of your body, the healing process will probably be difficult because most people are so used to using it. Getting to know how hand surgery could help you in case of emergency is helpful, since success often depends on you and the doctor acting fast.

You may get a cut on your hand that requires several stitches. While this may sound quite routine, sometimes the area that is treated will never be the same unless you have a specific type of hand surgery. You might need a skin graft, or in more severe cases in which the tissue gets infected, you may need to get part of the area amputated. Either way, it is nice to know that there are surgeons who specialize in such issues.

If your fingers or hands get crushed in some way, they will probably require microsurgery. This type of treatment is complex and is typically best performed by a specialist who performs hand surgery often. In most cases, you can get some or all movement back with time if you get the problem treated right away by a professional. Of course, depending on the severity, it will take time to heal no matter how experienced your surgeon is, so be prepared to take it easy for quite a while.

If you have an accidental amputation, whether part of your finger is bitten off by an animal or cut off by a knife, acting fast can make a huge difference. You should take the amputated piece, wash it carefully, wrap it in gauze, and then place it in a plastic bag filled with a mixture of ice and very cold water. The sooner you and the missing piece get to the doctor, the better chances you will have of being able to get it reattached with few issues.

Trauma to the hands happens often, which is why there are many physicians specializing in hand surgery. For best results, you should get an idea of the types of treatment available. You should also make sure there are qualified surgeons near you who are ready to take on traumatic issues regarding the hands and fingers.

With hand surgery, Houston based hand surgeon helps you get rid of various hand related deformities and ailments so that you enjoy your day to day physical activities without any obstacle. Know more about the surgery options at http://cyfairhandandwrist.com

Hand Surgeon: Get The Basics On Joint Replacement Surgery Of The Hand

Frequent use of the hands can often result in multiple issues, especially as you age. Sometimes cases of arthritis get so severe that you need join replacement surgery, which is also called arthroplasty. An experienced hand surgeon can usually solve the issue, but you should get to know a bit about this little-known procedure.

Despite how little is it talked about, arthroplasty is quite common since so many people suffer from arthritis. This surgery involves making an artificial joint out of either silicone or your own tendon.

It is necessary because as your joint wears down, usually as a result of both age and everyday use, eventually your bones are just rubbing together when you use your hands. Not surprisingly, this causes pain, swelling, and even popping, which is why having a reputable hand surgeon available to fix the issue is important.

Once it is determined that you have arthritis, your hand surgeon should use x-rays, thorough examinations, and even blood tests to decide if you need a new joint. In some cases, the bone spurs that cause the discomfort are simply removed, eliminating much of the pain.

If you either have advanced arthritis or are still quite young, you might be a candidate for joint fusion in which your joints are just fused together permanently. Of course, then you cannot move the area like you currently can, but the pain would go away.

If it is decided that joint replacement is your best option, it will next be determined where you need it. Your hand surgeon will probably choose this route for you if you are older and have rather low activity levels regarding your hands.

You may need the joints in any or all fingers replaced, or maybe it is your wrist that should be treated, though using this type of surgery for wrists is still very rare. As long as you have an experienced hand surgeon who you trust to help make the right decision for you, the results should be agreeable.

Not everyone is a good candidate for this type of treatment. It could hinder them in the long run, or there just might be easier solutions for them. However, if you are considered a good candidate for this operation, finding out what happens before, during, and after surgery can be helpful. Additionally, finding a doctor that you trust and can communicate well with is necessary to have the best experience possible.

An experienced hand surgeon in Houston offers you joint replacement procedure that helps you get rid of painful condition of arthritis, and reduce pain and inflammation related to it. Know more about the procedure at http://cyfairhandandwrist.com
