The NHS in Hastings and Rother is going on the road with a three-week tour offering local people a free health check on a specially designed mobile medical bus.

The NHS Health Check bus, a collaboration between the local NHS and pharmaceutical company Pfizer, is travelling to nine locations between 23 June – 20 July 2010 to bring essential health screening services to the community.

The aim is to reach people who wouldn’t normally go to their GP for a check-up and will screen for conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease and stroke.

The unique vehicle has been developed by health roadshow marketing specialist Event Marketing Solutions (EMS) who will manage the tour.

The NHS Health Checks are available to adults aged between 40 and 74, and are provided by trained nurses who will ask questions about the patient’s lifestyle, record their height, weight, blood pressure, pulse rate and conduct a simple blood test to check cholesterol levels.

Information and support for maintaining a healthy lifestyle will also be available to adults of any age.

The NHS Health Check mobile health bus is aimed at offering people an important service at a time and place more convenient to them so that they can get themselves checked out and make sure that any health problems or issues can be tackled as soon as possible.

EMS has planned and coordinated a number of mobile healthcare roadshows across the UK, including two ‘stop smoking’ initiatives for Newham and Derbyshire PCTs and sexual health campaigns for NHS Oxfordshire and NHS City and Hackney.

Keith Austin, Managing Director of EMS comments: “Taking screening services to where people live, work and play is a great way of targeting those who don’t normally go to their GP. We believe that a mobile campaign on a specially designed bus is a cost-effective, engaging way of encouraging people to come forward for tests, as well as publicising vital health messages.”

New research has revealed that nearly 70% of B2B marketing brands regard events as a ‘very important’ or ‘critical’ marketing tool as they battle the recession.

The survey by B2B Marketing magazine found that companies are increasing their focus and investment on face-to-face events – despite the downturn and the digital revolution, which many predicted would take over from traditional marketing strategies. Events take a significant portion of many brands’ budget, with almost 40% setting aside at least a quarter of their total marketing spend for them.

It’s also clear why: 40 % of companies surveyed believed that events were a ‘very good’ way of targeting key decision makers in senior management. ‘Building customer relationships’ was the most important reason cited by companies for running events.

Keith Austin, managing director of event marketing specialists EMS, commented: “These survey results are borne out by EMS’ continuing success in winning B2B contracts, despite these challenging times.”

“Roadshows are a cost-efficient, highly effective alternative to trade shows when brands are making every penny count.”

“Parker Hannifin recently showed their confidence in our mobile solutions by awarding a two-year extension to our contract with them for a state-of-the-art mobile showroom that will visit 22 countries across Europe. Our clients know that there is no substitute for taking the brand to customers on their doorstep and having that face-to-face dialogue.”

A new state-of-the art mobile surgery unit has been opened in Wandsworth, South London, to provide temporary accommodation for GP services during the construction of a new permanent health centre by leading independent care provider Care UK.

The eye-catching mobile medical unit – designed by specialist mobile trailer supplier EMS Healthcare – provides over 90 square metres of floor space, and houses three GP consulting rooms and a treatment room for minor surgery. It provides a comprehensive, self-contained mobile healthcare clinic that can be installed on site in just three hours.

The mobile medical unit at the Junction Health Centre will be on site for seven months and will serve the community from 8am – 8pm, seven days a week.

EMS Healthcare Managing Director Keith Austin said: “This unit is a perfect solution while Care UK build the much anticipated new health centre for people in Clapham Junction. It has enabled them to provide healthcare services right where they need it – straight away.”

“As well as providing high-quality, flexible accommodation, the unit will also operate independently without having to rely on mains support for power or waste. This is a major advantage over other forms of temporary accommodation.”

He added: “The primary healthcare sector is undertaking a great deal of new construction at the moment and our units meet the NHS’s need for cost-effective, high-quality temporary solutions that can be deployed extremely rapidly.”

The Liberty Plus units are the largest mobile healthcare facilities offered by EMS.

They are created by seamlessly linking together three vehicles, and have been built to strict NHS infection control and hygiene standards. They include a spacious reception, private staff area, disabled access, toilet facilities, air conditioning, CCTV / intruder alarm and self-contained power supply.

The Liberty Plus mobile healthcare units are suitable for a wide range of occupational health uses – from a GP or dental surgery to private health screening, testing and immunisation.

Weight Stayed the Same Over Three Years, But New Diseases Developed at Rapid Pace

LAS VEGAS, NV – JUNE 24, 2010 – Patients who were denied bariatric surgery for insurance reasons developed a slew of new obesity-related diseases and conditions within three years of follow-up, according to a new study presented here at the 27th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
Researchers at Gundersen Lutheran Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin, compared the medical records of 587 patients who had laparoscopic gastric bypass (LGB) with 189 patients who were medically eligible, but denied bariatric surgery by their insurance provider during the period 2001 to 2007. At the time of initial medical evaluation, patients in both groups had an average body mass index (BMI) of about 48. The goal of the research was to track the development of five obesity-related conditions in patients who were denied treatment and in patients who had bariatric surgery.
After three years, the average BMI in the surgical group had dropped to 30.5 and less than 1 percent of patients developed new obesity-related conditions, while a large number of patients in the denial group grew unhealthier. Though BMIs remained relatively unchanged in the denial group, more than 40 percent developed hypertension, 34 percent developed obstructive sleep apnea and nearly 20 percent developed gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Type 2 diabetes and lipid disorders developed in 9 percent and more than 11 percent, respectively.
“It is well known that bariatric surgery treats obesity-related diseases, our study now shows that it can prevent new diseases from occurring,” said Shanu N. Kothari, MD, senior author of the study and a bariatric surgeon at the Gunderson Lutheran Health System. “Health insurers should take this data into consideration when making decisions about whether or not to cover bariatric surgery. It is not only about the patient’s current health status, but what is likely to happen to them in a relatively short period of time without access to weight loss surgery.”

Previous studies have documented the beneficial effects of bariatric surgery. A 2004 study
published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed bariatric surgery patients lost between 62 and 75 percent of their excess weight and resolved or improved a number of obesity-related conditions including Type 2 diabetes (remission in 76.8% and significant improvement in 86%); hypertension (eliminated in 61.7% and significantly improvement in 78.5%); high cholesterol (reduced in more than 70%); and sleep apnea (eliminated in more than 85%).
Other studies show that obese individuals spend 36% more on health care costs and 77% more on medications per year than individuals of normal weight , and that annual obesity-related health spending reached $147 billion in 2008, double what it was a decade ago .
People who are considered eligible for surgery are morbidly obese, which is generally 75 to 100 or more pounds overweight, have a BMI of 40 or more, or a BMI of 35 or more with an obesity-related disease, such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease or sleep apnea.
According to the ASMBS, more than 15 million Americans have morbid obesity and in 2009 an estimated 220,000 people had some form of bariatric surgery. Only 1% of the clinically eligible population is being treated for morbid obesity through bariatric surgery . The most common methods of bariatric surgery are laparoscopic gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB).
In addition to Dr. Kothari, co-authors of the study were Ayman Al Harakeh, MD; Kyle J. Burkhamer; Kara J. Kallies, BA; Michelle A. Mathiason, MS; Shanu N. Kothari; MD; Department of Medical Education, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, La Crosse, WI; Department of Research, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, La Crosse, WI; Department of Surgery, Gundersen Lutheran Health System, La Crosse, WI
About the ASMBS
The ASMBS is the largest organization for bariatric surgeons in the world. It is a non-profit organization that works to advance the art and science of bariatric surgery and is committed to educating medical professionals and the lay public about bariatric surgery as an option for the treatment of morbid obesity, as well as the associated risks and benefits. It encourages its members to investigate and discover new advances in bariatric surgery, while maintaining a steady exchange of experiences and ideas that may lead to improved surgical outcomes for morbidly obese patients.

Diabetes mellitus is a ordinary disease in the United States. It is predictable that over 16 million Americans are by now caught with diabetes, and 5.4 million diabetics are not aware of the obtainable disease.

More Diabetes Control Information visit our site http://www.getallabout.com/natural-home-remedies/natural-remedies-for-diabetes.htm

Causes of Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus occur when the pancreas doesn’t make sufficient or any of the hormone insulin, or when the insulin shaped doesn’t work successfully.

In diabetes, this causes the level of glucose in the blood to be too high.

In Type 1 diabetes the cells in the pancreas that make insulin are shattered, causing a severe lack of insulin.

This is thought to be the result of the body aggressive and destroying its own cells in the pancreas – known as an autoimmune reaction.

Symptoms of Diabetes

1. Increased fatigue : Due to wastefulness of the cell to metabolize glucose, reserve fat of body is metabolized to gain power.

3. Polyuria: Increase in urine manufacture is due to excess glucose present in body. Body gets rid of the additional sugar in the blood by excreting it from side to side urine.

This leads to thirst because along with the sugar, a large quantity of water is excreted out of the body.

4. Polyphegia : The hormone insulin is also accountable for inspirational hunger. In order to cope up with high sugar levels in blood, body produces insulin which leads to augmented hunger.

There are two diverse types of diabetes. One is Type 1 diabetes and the other is Type 2 diabetes.

In Type 1 diabetes, the body is not able to make the amount of insulin that the body requires.

In Type 2 diabetes, the body is not capable to make use of the insulin that is produced by the body.

People who are afflict with either Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes should make sure that they do not put on too much weight.

There are many people who have the precise amount of fat inside the body and hence they are neither too fat nor too thin.
These people are much healthier compare to those people who are either too thin or overweight.

High levels of vitamin D in the middle-age and the older people can reduce their chances of developing heart disease or diabetes by 43%, according to researchers at the University of Warwick.

A team of researchers at Warwick Medical School carried out a systematic literature review of studies examining vitamin D and cardiometabolic disorders. Cardiometabolic disorders include cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in some foods and is also produced when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. vitamin D can also be found in tuna, salmon milk, eggs, mackerel, sardines, and in some breakfast cereals. It is also available as a dietary supplement.

Researchers looked at 28 studies including 99,745 participants across a variety of ethnic groups including men and women.

These studies were published between 1990 and 2009 with the bulk being published between 2004 and 2009. Half of them were conducted in the US, eight were European, two studies were from Iran, three from Australasia and one from India.

The studies revealed a significant association between high levels of vitamin D and a decreased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (33 percent compared to low levels of vitamin D), type 2 diabetes (55 percent reduction) and metabolic syndrome (51 percent reduction).

The literature review was led by Johanna Parker and Oscar Franco, assistant professor in public health at Warwick.

“We found that high levels of vitamin D among middle age and elderly populations are associated with a substantial decrease in cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome, ” said Franco, according to a Warwick release.

‘Targeting vitamin D deficiency in adult populations could potentially slow the current epidemics of cardiometabolic disorders,’ he concluded.

So, boost your D with safe sun exposure, or supplement your diet with 1,000 IUs of vitamin D3 a day. And be sure to eat a variety of foods rich in vitamin D.

Eating a higher-fiber diet is important to optimum health for a variety of reasons. High fiber diet has been prove to lower cholesterol level in the blood, control your blood sugar levels, improve slow digestion, prevent cancer and prevent constipation. Fiber can actually help us to eat less and lose excess weight.

According to researchers, eating more fiber is associated with reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes.

A recent study from Slone Epidemiology Center at Boston University followed 40,000 African American women over eight years and looked at their dietary habits while noting the development of type 2 diabetes within the group. The researchers found that the more high fiber cereals consumed, the lower the risk for diabetes in the women.

“Increasing cereal fiber in the diet may be an effective means of reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes, a disease that has reached epidemic proportions in black women,” concludes Dr. Supriya Krishman, lead author on the study published in the November 2007 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

An earlier report from Harvard School of Public Health in Boston found similar results with data from more than 286,000 women who had participated in the Nurses’Health Studies and other research programs. During the 12 to 18 year follow up, approximately 11,000 women were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, but the women who ate more whole grain foods were less likely to develop the disease.

The authors report that just two servings a day of whole grains were associated with a 21% decrease in the risk for diabetes. They suggest that these studies “consistently support increasing whole grain consumption for the prevention of type 2 diabetes.”

In general, try to increase the fiber in your diet. By eating more fiber rich foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds and high fiber fruits, you can not only lose weight, but also decrease your risk of diabetes, colon cancer, hemorrhoids, high cholesterol, and heart disease.

When people go into their doctor’s and hear the words, “you need a Diabetic Diet” they tend to go hysterical, but it is not necessary and you don’t have to. There is no actual diet plan known as the “Diabetic Diets” out there. However, an experienced nutritionist can give you guidance and set you in the right direction. In this article I am going to use all my experience to give you some ideas and tips for you to discuss with your nutritionist or doctor, regarding a diabetic’s diet. Once you have had some time to come to terms with having diabetes, give your doctor a call to get some information on how changing your diet properly may help you control your diabetes..

The first thing to take into account is that once you have been diagnose with diabetes you do not have to stop eating everything you normally eat you but you may need to make some small changes and eat them slightly differently. Here are a few things you can change regarding your eating habits:

1. Keep a watchful eye on how much food do you eat now?

2. What time of day do you normally eat?

3. How you prepare your food

4. Decrease sweet and sugary foods

5. Watch when and how you consume carbohydrates

6. Increase the quantity of the following:

• Whole wheat grains

• Vegetables

• Fruit

7. Cut down on your fat intake

8. Moderation or stop drinking alcoholic drinks

When you are trying to adjust to a Diabetic Diet Plan it can some times be easer than you think, one thing that can be helpful is keep track of how much food you normally consume at each meal and large or how many snacks do you have throughout the day? Eating regular through the day is quite important if you are a diabetic so you will need to start by eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner regularly with the occasional snacks in between. Most health experts, dieticians and doctors recommend that you maintain at least a 1600 calorie diet on a daily basis, which of course rules out going on any diet plan such as the Cabbage soup diet, Low gi diet or even the Dukan diet.

If you do eat a large amount of food then you will defiantly need to cut back. Adding small healthy, nutritional snacks during the day will usually help keep any hunger pains at bay, this will also do positive things for you. It will also help keep your sugar level under control and keep you from binge eating when you sit down to eat at regularly meal times. However, if hunger pains do become a problem sometimes introducing a natural dietary supplement like Green tea extracts, Hoodia Goodonii, Maqui berry or Gynexin can some times be beneficial, but common sense must always prevail here, so you should always check with you medical doctor just to ensure that such supplements are compatible with you condition or any medical treatment you may be receiving
