Some points to consider when you have to decide on what kind of dentist to select for the whole family.

The majority of dentist who are practicing are general practitioners who are trained and able to work with a wide spectrum of patients of all ages. A small minority of dentist are specialist that treats only in one of the nine specialty fields such as an oral surgeon or a dentist who treats only children.

When it comes time to decide what kind of dentist would serve your family best there are many advantages to choosing a family dentist. This choice makes it easier on your busy schedule to schedule appointments for the whole family with one practitioner instead of running all over town to take the kids to a pediatric dentist and you and your spouse to a general dentist.

A children’s dentist may have a waiting room that is set up for kids with games and toys but it isn’t the waiting room that should be selling point. When you are trying to decide between a family dentist and a specialist you need to ask yourself some basic questions. Is it going to make it easier or harder on you or whoever chauffeurs the kids to the dentist to have to go to a different dentist from the adults in the home? Is having a dentist who can only treat your child until they turn eighteen worth the future inconvenience? Wouldn’t it be easier if your child grew up with the same dentist they could continue to go to as young adults who already knows their dental history and oral hygiene habits?

Your child should start seeing the family dentist at a young age, even while they still have only baby teeth to contend with. The dentist can educate your child and whole family about the proper care of teeth and help install good life long oral hygiene habits at a young age. Ideally if visits to the family dentist have begun at a young age it will be second nature to your child to take care of their teeth as they age and they won’t develop a fear of the dentist chair that is so common in not only children but adults as well.

If your child is already fearful of visiting the dentist it can help for the family dentist to be someone who you are already familiar and comfortable with as a patient so you won’t worry about the care and treatment your child will receive knowing the quality of care you already see from this doctor.

Feeling uncomfortable with your smile can cause social discomfort. Issues with tooth coloration, spacing and shape affect many people. Dental veneers are the solution to a variety of cosmetic problems.

Feeling dissatisfied with the way your teeth look can easily be a thing of the past. If you are like me and many other people there are aspects of you smile that you dislike. Today there is a new and beautiful way to get a terrific new smile. They are called dental veneers and they can vastly improve the look of your teeth in a far shorter time than other practices. There are several cosmetic issues that dental veneers can solve, including:

Genetics: The fact is you may have been born with natural gaps or spaces between your teeth; they may be uneven or in some cases crooked.

Damage: There is natural wear that happens as we age. This gives then an uneven appearance and often results in chips and cracks. Additionally some medicines can permanently alter the color of your teeth.

Worn enamel: As time goes on the protective covering of our teeth weakens and thins. When this happens it often becomes dulled and discolored. This is often the result of too much sodas, tea, coffee, or smoking but is also a sign of aging.

Dental veneers easily conceal all of these problems. In minor cases your dentist may opt to simply fill in the small chips and cracks, but for more severe cases of discoloration, spacing or wear it is likely that your dentist will recommend dental veneers.

Besides improving the aesthetics of you smile dental veneers provide protection for the surface of a damaged tooth. They can be used in place of some crowns especially on areas that are particularly visible. Also they are very thin and thus require little or no remodeling of the underlying tooth to achieve a look that is beautiful and natural. They can simply be bonded onto the tooth and once in place tend to be fairly strong and durable. Care must be taken however not to damage or break dental veneers. Because they are made of thin porcelain it is often suggested that patients who clench their jaws at night wear a tooth guard and care be taken to avoid foods that may chip or break the porcelain shells.

If any of these issues plague your life cause embarrassment in social situations or inhibit your ability to feel comfortable smiling then consult with your dentist and discuss your options. He or she will be able to provide you with before and after pictures and give you an idea of what you may need and how much it will cost. I’m certain that once you see the dramatic results that are possible you will be excited to start your smile makeover.

If you need to find a new dentist, start by asking around. Consider the dental practitioners credentials and specialties, as well as your insurance coverage, then schedule an appointment to see if a particular dental office is a good fit for you.

Finding a dental practitioner is not always easy. You may have some preconceived ideas about what the dentist will be like, or maybe you had a bad experience with one in the past. Maybe you have recently moved to a new area and do not yet have contacts to draw from to make your choice. Regardless of your circumstances, choosing can be quite a challenge.

One place to start is with the American Dental Association. While good dental practitioners may choose not to be part of the Association, those that are Association member agree to adhere to the principles in the ADA Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct. A dentist from this list is dedicated to taking care of dental needs to the best of his or her ability.

If you have friends or family or coworkers that you trust, ask them about their dental health professionals and how they feel about them. Use these recommendations and reviews to help you narrow down your list. Sometimes asking around is the best way to find out about the top dental offices in your geographic area.

Consider whether or not you need a specialist. Will your children be seeing the dental practitioner you choose? Then choose one known for creating a good rapport with kids, and consider looking for one that employs an orthodontist, so you can get all of your family’s dental needs cared for at the same location. Do you have implants? Choose a dentist with an expertise in this area. Are you facing serious dental procedures? Consider one who specializes in sedation dentistry.

You also need to consider whether or not a particular practitioner is on your insurance plan, if you have insurance coverage for dental care. If you do not have dental care coverage, find an office that offers a discount plan. These plans allow you to buy into a plan that gives you the right to lower-cost dental care for a set period of time, usually a year.

Once you have a short list, schedule an appointment. Many dental offices offer free appointments to new customers. If possible, take advantage of this offer to screen the dentist personally. Even when you have done your research, you may find yourself in the office of a fully qualified dental practitioner, only to find that your personalities do not mix well. If you are visiting using the free initial appointment, you can simply move on to the next dentist on your list until you find the one that best fits your desires and needs.

Resients of Ocala, dentist services are available to you. View a list of practitioners
and the offered procedures to decide which is best for you. Visit http://www.ocaladentalcare.com

Going to the dentist once every six months is a vital part of keeping your teeth gleaming and healthy. In between that time, dental health experts agree that a regimen of brushing after every meal and flossing once daily is a good way to keep any kind of dental disease from creeping in. However, there are other things you can do to protect the health of your teeth. These things come in the food that you eat and those you avoid.

Calcium is one of the most important aspects of keeping your teeth strong. While everyone knows this, many people do not get enough in their daily diet. Milk and dairy products, sardines, almonds, and certain types of dark green vegetables are all filled with calcium and should be consumed to build up the tooth structure, especially for children and teenagers. Speaking of children, they should also make sure and get enough fluoride in their diet. This can come from fluoridated water (check to see if your municipality adds fluoride to the water). Tea and certain other beverages are also made with fluoride. If it is impossible to get it through these avenues, there are commercial mouthwashes and toothpastes with fluoride added.

While this isn’t breaking news, you won’t find a dentist around who won’t encourage children and adults to limit their intake of sugar. Not only does a large intake of refined sugar pose serious risks to your overall health, it can wreak havoc on your teeth. This means avoiding foods such as cookies and cakes as well as sodas and sugary cereals. But sugar isn’t the only culprit to watch out for. Foods rich in simple carbohydrates such as white rice and white bread are also hazards to the teeth. For better results, try foods such as whole wheat bread and brown rice.

Nothing can take the place of a regular, sustained dental regimen, but there are numerous foods you can eat to take better care of your teeth. Fresh fruits are among the better foods, along with the dark green vegetables mentioned earlier. Sugarless gum can have a nice effect on the health of your teeth, as the chewing is good for the gums and the saliva increased by the flavor can wash away bits of food particles left in between the teeth. Coffee and cigarettes are wisely avoided, although this has more to do with the appearance of the teeth than the health. Ask your dentist for more tips regarding the best foods to eat and which ones to watch out for.

You may not think about it in these terms, but any dentist will tell you that maintaining a healthy smile can go a long way when it comes to maintaining your overall health. Even today, study after study has been done proving the link between good oral health and the overall health of the body. A regular and regimented daily brushing routine, along with regular trips to the dentist, can not only help prevent infections and cavities in the mouth, they may be able to make a big difference in your continued avoidance of more serious illnesses.

One reason for this link is a substance called biofilm. This is a colorless substance that collects on the teeth. In everyday terms, we refer to this substance as plaque. Brushing and flossing can go a long way to remove biofilm, but it’s not enough. To really make sure it stays off the teeth, you need to see the dentist every six months and have a professional teeth cleaning performed. It’s important to remember that shiny, gleaming white teeth may look nice, it’s not necessarily indicative of overall oral health. So while teeth whitening systems available at the drugstore may help you to look your best, they don’t do anything to improve the health of your teeth.

Why is biofilm, or plaque, so necessary to get rid of? Well, it can contribute to various forms of gum disease, which can in turn lead to more serious health problems elsewhere in the body. Gum disease comes in a few different forms, including periodontitis and gingivitis. Gingivitis is an early stage of the disease, and it affects the gums exclusively. When a person is infected with gingivitis, their gums usually bleed easily and they take on a swollen appearance. If left untreated, this can turn into periodontitis, moving below the gumline. When this sets in, it can lead to much more serious health problems, including heart disease and complications with pregnancy.

There are many things you can do to prevent your oral health from falling into a state of decay. This includes following a stringent and regular brushing and flossing routine. This includes brushing after every meal and flossing at least once a day. You should also see a dentist at least once every six months for a cleaning and a checkup. Examine your teeth and gums and make an appointment if you notice any bleeding or swelling that can’t be explained.

Not every dentist is created alike. There are many different dental professionals available to choose from. Select the best one for you.

There are multitudes of choices out there when it comes to selecting a dentist. A dental professional will make a big difference in the care of an individual’s teeth and gums. There are various specialties in this profession as well as personality types. Here are some things to think about when selecting a dentist.

Dental specialty is one component to base a decision on. There are a variety of professionals who take care of oral health. Oral health includes the care of gums, mouth and teeth. Depending on a person’s age or need, there is a specialty that will suit them. Some examples are pediatric, cosmetic and general dentists. There are also orthodontists and endodontists.

- Pediatric dental pros focus their practice on working with the younger set. This includes babies and toddlers through adolescence. Even very young tots need oral care in terms of keeping gums clean and healthy as the teeth are initially emerging. Some pediatric practices add video games to their waiting rooms, colorful murals on their walls and funny sunglasses for their patients to wear during office visits. This makes it a more playful experience for all.

- Cosmetic: Cosmetic dentists are those that concentrate on beautifying their patients’ smiles. Services that they may offer include bleaching and whitening of stained or yellowed teeth, capping jagged or cracked enamel, and applying veneers.

- General: A general oral health practitioner takes care of the mouths of all ages and a multitude of general dental complaints, including repairs and maintenance. This professional is usually a practitioner for the entire family.

- Orthodontists: Orthodontists work on the straightening of each tooth. While teens make up the bulk of their patients, adults of all ages also opt for straightening. Today’s braces come in a variety of appearances. Gone are smiles filled with metal railroad tracks or tin grins. Modern apparatuses may be clear or brightly colored to create a cool and creative look. If a person is going to have their teeth straightened, they might as well have a bit of fun while they’re at it.

- Endodontists: Endodontists are dental professionals who care for the pulp and tissue surrounding each tooth. When most people think of oral care, they only think of the teeth. Endodontists care for the adjoining region which contains nerves, arteries, lymphatic and fibrous tissue — all imperative to oral health. A breakdown in these systems may cause pain, tooth loss and disease. This professional performs root canals, applies crowns and repairs cracked or damaged enamel.

Personality types are another thing to consider:

- Chair-side manner: Just like physicians and surgeons have different temperaments and bedside manners, dentists do too. Some people prefer loud and charming individuals working in their mouth while others prefer quiet and reserved types. Interviewing the prospective pro before becoming their patient is one way to size them up.

- Sensitive approaches to dental fears: Some patients have phobias and fears due to past bad experiences. Some dentists are deeply sensitive to this issue and will therefore be the best practitioners for those patients that are fearful or phobic.

Your child’s first dental appointment can go smoothly if you take time to prepare your child what will happen. The recommended age for a child’s first appointment varies, and a pediatric professional may be the best route for a child or a parent who has anxiety.

The recommended age for a child’s first visit to the dentist varies from those professionals who want to see a child around age one when the baby has a few teeth to age three or four when all a child’s baby teeth have emerged and settled. The variation of opinion is probably due to how each individual dentist works with children. Those who want to see children at a younger age are concerned not so much with oral hygiene as they are with getting acquainting with the staff and the structure of a typical appointment before problems with teeth begin to occur not wanting the first experience to be one that involves shots, extractions, or other anxiety ridden procedures. A dentist who suggests that a child visit at the age of three or four is likely being respectful of insurance stipulations; most policies begin to cover preventative dental at three to five years of age. Either school of thought is respectable, and the choice should be made based on each individual case.

If as a parent you have your own apprehensions about the dentist, try to keep your fear at bay for the sake of your child. Prepare for the first trip by reading story books about what to expect or watching videos of the same plot. Look for age appropriate learning and preparation activities on the American Dental Association website such as coloring sheets, stories, puzzles, etc., and tap in to a friend’s expertise who has already experienced the first appointment. If insurance allows, a pediatric professional is possibly the best choice for those anxious children or parents, though a family dentist with whom you already have a history and a relationship is also an appropriate choice. Ultimately, you want a professional who is good with children whether his/her experience was learned through additional training or through raising his/her own children. Do not focus your research on the doctor alone; a hygienist, assistant, the office staff, and the office environment can make or break the experience for your child.

Hopefully, the first appointment will be a routine preventative care visit, and you can expect the staff to get to know your child, show him/her good brushing and tooth and mouth care techniques, teach him about healthy eating for healthy teeth, and, once a rapport as been established, clean his teeth. It is perfectly okay if your baby doesn’t make it all the way through the appointment; x-rays, exams, can be overwhelming, but if you have begun the journey early enough and before teeth problems emerge, taking a few routine appointments to get acquainted with the process can be a good approach.

Those looking for a way to improve the quality of their smile are in luck. With a vast array of procedures, the fields of cosmetic dentists are now able to offer patients the ability to obtain the smile of their dreams.

But what treatment methods best suit your individual needs? In this article, we will outline a few of the basic procedures in order to give you a better idea.

Teeth Whitening – Also many times referred to as “teeth bleaching”, this procedure can effectively whiten your teeth from staining and / or discoloration. This procedure may be performed in a dental office or in the patient’s own home. However, it should be noted that not everyone’s teeth are suitable for bleaching, and thus it is vital that patients consult their dentist before engaging in this treatment.

Veneers – These are thin porcelain, or composite material shells that are custom fitted and cemented to the front side of your teeth. These shells are used as treatment for such conditions as slightly crooked teeth, discoloration, chipped teeth, or even spaces between teeth.

Implants – dental implants are metal devices that are designed in order to replace missing teeth. They are generally made from titanium and surgically placed into the jawbone in the spot where the tooth is missing. Unlike temporary means such as dental bridges, these implants are permanent. They are designed to act as a tooth root and are able to effectively anchor crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Crowns – These are custom-fitted caps made to fit over the entire tooth post preparation. They are generally made from acrylic or porcelain and have been fused to metal to ensure they will withstand biting pressure. These caps may be used as a treatment option for poorly shaped, decayed, chipped, or broken teeth.

Shaping – Also known to some as “enamel shaping”, this is the process by which your dentist is able to reshape teeth through the act of filling or removing much of the enamel. The treatment is generally pain free, and produces immediate effects.

Bonding – This is the process where toned materials are bonded to the tooth. This process is a means for repairing or improving the appearance of a tooth that has been badly chipped, stain, or broken.

Orthodontic Treatment – Braces and retainers are not just for children. In fact, in recent years, more and more adults have been looking into the benefits of receiving orthodontic attention. This is a means for treating crooked or buck teeth.

Hopefully this information has been found useful to you. Be sure to discuss your options with your primary dentist prior to seeking out a procedure to help decide which treatments may be best suited for your needs.

When it comes to the oral care of children, pediatric dentists certainly have their work cut out for them. The treatment of children poses many challenges in regard to proper care. Many kids will become uncooperative due to fear and anxiety. In addition, many children tend to be uncomfortable in general practice offices that cater to adults due to the dull and sterile atmosphere. In cases such as these, many parent opt to finding a specialist who knows just how to cater to children’s needs.

The AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) defines these professionals as oral care specialists who focus on the treatment of children. The offices typically have a child-friendly along with a staff who are trained in dealing with small children’s fears, effectively alleviating many of the concerns and fears children have regarding dentist visits. These specialists are able to treat kids from newborns to early teenagers.

Pediatric dentists must go through the same training as that of any other oral care provider. Once completed, three to four years of additional training are required to prepare students in their specialty. This training involves hands-on practice with children in addition to theory, and technique advancements. Students are also trained to deal with special needs children who may be mentally or physically challenged.

While most general practices have no problem treating children, there are some key benefits found in working with a pediatric specialist. These physicians are trained to focus on instilling quality dental habits, enabling them to avoid more extensive problems and treatments once they reach adulthood. This also helps to alleviate dental phobias that many people experience in adulthood due to their dental experience as children.

Children should generally begin attending appointments around age one. These initial visits will allow the dentist to treat any potential issues early on, while gaining the trust of the patient at an early age. Fluoride treatments and sealants will be applied to the teeth as they erupt, and cavities will be treated accordingly. Children may also be evaluated in regard to potential orthodontic problems around age 7. Specialists can help to educate children on proper home care techniques as well.

If you are interested in finding a specialist you deals with the oral health of children, the best place to begin is by talking to your current dentist. Many practitioners have a vast knowledge of other caregivers in the area, and should be more than happy to recommend one.
