A lot of people were apprehensive about having Tom Cruise play the role of von Stauffenberg. Stauffenberg’s attempt to assassinate Hitler was considered by many to be one of the few honourable deeds the Germans performed during World War II and many were worried this would be sullied by Tom Cruise’s performance.

Fortunately that wasn’t the case. Cruise played the role magnificently. His character was subtle, modest and respectful. He was also driven and sharp and willing to do what it took to achieve his objectives.

The story cleverly interweaves the facts with an amazingly suspenseful storyline. The movie sticks closely enough to the facts to create and enhance a sense of realism, but doesn’t hesitate to add some spice when it deems necessary.

The story’s tension keeps on mounting throughout the movie as men take risk after risk to accomplish the mission. The operation, known as Operation Valkyrie, involves trying to get the reserve army to attack Hitler’s SS troops. The assassination attempt was to be carried out with a bomb.

As the movie unfolds, the possibility of a traitor in their midst emerges. The storyline takes a twist as more and more about the characters unfold and their many motivations come into question. It turns out Clause von Stauffenberg may not be the highly moral character that he’s originally portrayed to be.

Most movies are a slow build-up towards the ending, which is a mystery. With this film, however, everyone already knows how it will end since we know that World War II didn’t end until the Allies invaded.

Knowing the ending actually just adds to the suspense and in fact adds a sense of apprehension and horror as the movie progresses. As things start to slowly go wrong, the sense of knowing how the plot will end just adds to the ‘edge of your seat’ aspect of the film.

Overall this movie was truly artistically done. It has everything you could want from a spy movie or from an action movie, but interweaved with an amazing real life story that will capture almost any audience. On the whole I would say that this movie easily warrants a rating of 5 stars out of 5.

One thing this movie really excelled in was the film set and the overall setting. The costumes were done superbly well and were really authentic, and the set really sucks you in to the 18th century.

The movie truly creates a unique atmosphere that seems to magically take you back in time so you can actually experience what the culture was like back in this particular period. The music was top notch and really complimented the atmosphere. Plus the acting and mannerisms of the characters in the movie played a great role as well.

The storyline revolves around the Duke, who’s busy attending to his affairs but desperately wants to have a son. Unfortunately for the Duchess, she keeps having daughter after daughter, which causes the Duke to behave in a harsher and harsher manner towards the Duchess.

Midway through the movie, the Duchess’ best friend starts sleeping with the Duke. Unfortunately for the Duchess, as much as she would like to kick her out of the house, she can’t because the Duke is enjoying her company. The storyline is simple and the movie plot revolves primarily among the developing characters.

In my own opinion the storyline is too simple and unfortunately isn’t really that entertaining. The emotional range the audience experiences through watching the movie is somewhat narrow and overall the movie is more of a smooth car ride than an emotional roller coaster.

The acting is done quite well, although somewhat bland. Overall the film gets a 2.5 out of 5.

For fans of the old 18th century films, this film does really do well on the set and costumes. Unfortunately the story of the ‘poor damsel’ has been quite overdone in Hollywood already. Most fans of this genre won’t find anything particularly different about this one.

The film is a very realistic glimpse into the 18th century and how women were treated. Their wants and needs are discarded and they are subjected to the every whim of the men of the household. Marriage is treated as nothing more than a contract. In fact when the Duchess does manage to produce a son, she’s given a check for her ’services rendered’.

Overall I would say that the movie might be enjoyable for those who want a nice, slow paced 18th century film. However for the rest of us, The Duchess is one of those movies that you might watch if it’s shown on TV, but you wouldn’t rush out to rent or buy the DVD because it’s fairly average.

At first the duo hates each other’s guts. They can’t stand the sight of one another. However they gradually start to find commonalities and start to like one another. They realize they have the same tastes in books, movies and even women.

The movie is funny and does get the audience going from time to time. Throughout the movie there were very few moments where the laughter was truly a belly-hurting laugh. Most of the time the laughs were from semi-funny jokes.

As with most ‘cheesy humour’ films, most of the jokes you can see coming from a mile off. The humour tends to be quite immature rather than witty. That said, the movie was quite funny.

Step Brothers is a great film to rent if you want to spend a night alone with a moderately entertaining film. It’s definitely not a family film or a modern-day classic, and probably isn’t a movie you would want to watch on a romantic date.

If you enjoy crass or over the top humour, Step Brothers might be for you. On the other hand, if you enjoy classier or more subtle humour, Step Brothers probably isn’t the movie you’re looking for.

The character development in this movie was actually quite good. The brothers’ interactions were very well done, their humour playing off each other flawlessly. The rest of the family played their part very well as well. Many of the jokes played off the dysfunctional family’s interactions.

Overall this movie gets a 2.5 out of 5. The storyline is medium; the humour is decent if somewhat predictable or cheesy. Overall you’ll likely walk away from the movie thinking it was a good if unmemorable experience.

On the other hand, if you want to enjoy a nice, relaxing comedic scene Step Brothers can be a great rent. A lot of the audience really loved the movie, and you might too.
